Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday signed three bills authorizing payments to Palm Beach County residents with claims against local governments.
The three claims bills affecting Palm Beach County residents are:
HB 3511, Relief/Carl Abbott/Palm Beach County School Board: This bill directs the Palm Beach County School Board to pay $633,333 to David Abbott as compensation for injuries and damages sustained by Carl Abbott, a 73-year-old man who died in June, seven years after he was struck by a Palm Beach County school bus.
HB 3533, Relief/Estate of Manuel Antonio Matute/Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office: This bill authorizes the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to pay an additional $372,000 to the five children of Manuel Antonio Matute, 60, who was killed when his vehicle was struck head-on by a sheriff’s deputy who lost control of his cruiser on U.S. 441 in 2008. The sheriff’s office already has paid them $128,000.
HB 3547, Relief/Javier Soria/Palm Beach County: This bill authorizes Palm Beach County to pay Javier Soria $100,000. The father of three was riding a motorcycle when he was struck by a Palm Beach County dump truck on Congress Avenue in 2007, causing him lifelong neurological and physical injuries. He settled his lawsuit for $300,000 and has been paid $200,000.
